Exercise therapy and rehabilitation
A movement plan for the back, neck and joints, and for returning to work. The main part of treatment for most muscle and joint pain.
Why is movement the main treatment?
For back pain and sciatica, the main advice is to stay active and keep up your daily activities. Long spells in bed do not help. Sciatica can hurt when you move, but that pain is not a sign of harm, and moving can help you get better faster.
If back pain has not improved after a few weeks, group exercise, physiotherapy, manual therapy or cognitive behavioural therapy are usually suggested.
How is a rehabilitation plan built?
A physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist focuses treatment on function. The doctor sets the plan and works with physiotherapists and occupational therapists. The starting point is what you cannot do now and want to do again.
The plan may include:
- Exercises to strengthen muscle and free up joint movement
- Manual therapy and teaching to manage pain
- Methods such as TENS, ultrasound and hydrotherapy, where suitable
- An exercise plan for home
What happens at physiotherapy?
At the first session you are asked about your symptoms, medical history and lifestyle. The area is examined, and your strength and balance are tested. You talk through the options and how many sessions you may need.
You are usually given exercises to do at home after each session. Doing them regularly is what moves recovery along.
Which activities help?
Walking, swimming, yoga and pilates may ease back pain. If a movement makes the pain worse, stop it and talk to your doctor or physiotherapist. Simple examples are in the guide to moving at home.
Support for physiotherapy sessions
The patient support form lists physiotherapy and rehabilitation at Vali-e-Asr Hospital with free transfer, and physiotherapy at home. Details are on the support page.
Frequently asked questions
How many physiotherapy sessions do I need?
It depends on your condition and your goal. The number is agreed with your physiotherapist at the first session.
Won't exercise make the pain worse?
You may feel some discomfort at first. If a movement makes pain worse, stop it and ask. The plan should start at your level and build up slowly.
Do I need a back brace or neck collar?
Your doctor will say after examining you. Ask before using one for long.
The first step is hearing your story.
